This review is from: McAfee Total Protection 2012--3 Users [Old Version] (Software) I've purchased and used this product for a few years without much problems until a few days ago when the "Privacy Protection" malware infected my wife's computer. I THOUGHT I had "total protection" with this product so I simply downloaded the latest updates and ran a "deep scan"...only to discover it didn't get rid of the problem. I then went to MaAfee.com and drilled down to their technical support page. From there, I started a chat dialog with one of their technical support reps who confirmed that their software doesn't protect against this problem. Instead, the tech rep suggest I purchase their "Virus Removal Service" for $89.95/year...so much for McAfee's "total protection". I then downloaded the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program from CNET which worked as advertised. I don't see the point of paying for something that doesn't work as advertised when I can get a better product for free. This review is from: McAfee Total Protection 2012--3 Users [Old Version] (Software) When I replaced tried to replace my expiring McAfee program, with another, Total Protection 2011,re-starting my computer was a necessary part of the installation. But upon restarting, my system crashed. For some reason I was unable to use System Restore and had to reformat the hard drive. I assumed (foolishly) that this was a system problem, and installed a new copy of Total Protection 2011 on my brand new system. It seemed to work, but asked me to "activate", which I did by clicking the activate button; but again and again it counted down the 15 days until it stopped working, never accepting activation. The software would never accept activation!! I tried to remove the program and "bang", system crash. Same problem. McAfee was no help, their auto find-and-fix did not solve the problem and I refused to pay US$128.00 to McAfee for help with a problem caused by McAfee. I paid a Dell technician top remove all the pieces of McAfee that were in place and could not be removed with de-install software. McAfee? NEVER AGAIN. Buyer beware!!! I returned Total Protection 2012 to Amazon.com. This review is from: McAfee Total Protection 2012--3 Users [Old Version] (Software) So I bought this product over the Cyber Week Lightning Sales, I thought it would be a good buy for a little bit of money. But I was very, very wrong! The installation went pretty smoothly, I did not have many issues with that. On Wednesday it was installed, on Thursday, my system crashed! Total Protection? Yeah right! I have a lot of important documents that I need for college that I'm not really sure how I'm going to recover at this point. I uninstalled McAfee, but the system does not work. When I contacted McAfee about the issue, they claimed it was not related to McAfee. However, I said if it was Total Protection then why did this happen? They really didn't have an answer for me. Currently, I'm still unsure of what to do with my current laptop, though I felt it was very necessary to inform all potential buyers about the situation I had and urge you stay away from this. Interestingly enough, McAfee wants you to purchase something that will fix all your errors, the price was something like 86 bucks. Yeah right! I'm not going to shell out the money for that when it was McAfee that caused the issue. Funny, McAfee messes up my system and low and behold they have the solution for you right away but at a cost. I always make sure all defensive measures are in place to prevent a virus attack. But you can never be too careful. Just recently, I was infected by a really annoying and persistent malware called Security Suite. It creeps in your pc using back door methods and displays itself as an anti-virus software that persistently appears on your deskstop and no amount of clicking close or manual removal will remove it. Once infected, it disables your configured settings, disables your LAN settings--you wont be able to go online. Heck, my infection was so bad, it even disabled my ability to do a manual run of my anti-virus and anti-spyware! To an individual with basic computer skills, this annoyance will make you go to your nearest geeksquad and spend a hefty amount for its removal. But for industrious individuals, there is way and it effectively removes this rogue malware. There is a ton of information online on how to go about removing this infection. It gives you step by step instructions on how to remove them and what utilities you will need to counter this infection. Along with Rkill (Rogue Registry Killer), Malwarebytes effectively removed the rogue Security Suite malware that was bypassed by my separately installed Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs. Apparently, some malwares are immune from detection by your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware software because it is always evolving, their configurations are getting better and better to escape detection. Malwarebytes scanned my system, detected the threat and effectively removed them from my pc. Malwarebytes is a software designed specifically to detect and destroy rogue threats that has infected your pc. I was truly awed by this product. I have the trial version at the moment but will be upgrading ASAP to the full version to avail of is versatility and all-around protection 24/7. I saved a friend's computer from several Trojans that took over his computer. It took a lot of work to be able to install this product and run it but that was only caused by the Trojans. Those suckers would not allow access to internet and all types of folders and installations. I finally ran this Malwarebytes program after getting it to install and run in safe mode and wow it took care of all those horrible Trojans. I even used the file assassin program that comes with the purchase to destroy extra file extensions to some other forms of viruses that were hidden from his standard Anti Virus program. (Yeah I know call me dumb). Well it "free scanned" alright and after that every 30 minutes this pop-up advertisement would come on my screen; bounce me off the place I was on and I'd have to wait 8 (seemed forever slow) seconds for this advertisement to creep up and down the screen of my desktop. When playing on-line games I would get bounced back to the desktop and interupt my game play, usually at the most crucial times. To say the least it was annoying but I tried everything I could think of to get rid of it to no avail. I located it on my tool bar but it couldn't be removed, I used my McAffee scan and dug deep into what it could do but it could not remove that maleware. (guessing its maleware). I googled the internet following lots of others advice and ways and means which didn't solve the issue. It wasn't until I bought this product (recommended by a coworker) that I finally got rid of it. It was like having the worse case of itching hives, being in frustration and misery and finally relief. Ahhhhh!. It quarantined that annoying maleware/popup I had been tortured by for months and let me tell you the joy (revenge) I felt when I pressed "delete". (I laughed like Rinfield all through the house...((tah hee, hee, hee hee)); good thing no one was around to witness this). This is a great product and I only ran the basic scan to have it find my primary maleware item; a total of 9 undetected items that my McAfee did not. If you are having a horribly frustrating time with maleware or popups that you can't get rid of I truly suggest trying out Malewarebytes. It was well worth the $20 for eliminating the maleware/popup; bringing peace of mind and for eliminating the need for "colorful metaphors" to pop up in my mind (and occassionally out of my mouth). People often ask, what are the top computer virus warning signs? Sometimes people suspect that their computer is infected, but can't quite determine for sure. Other times they are using an older or inferior antispyware/antivirus program that has trouble detecting the latest threats. Well here are three surefire computer virus warning signs that your computer is infected.

1. You are getting pop up alerts warning that you have spyware or viruses on your system. These pop ups will have danger signs and explicit warnings while providing a link to download their software. This could be a number of different warnings such as:

o Warning spyware detected on your computer!
o Windows has detected spyware infection
o Warning spyware threat has been detected on your PC!
o You have a security problem!

3. Your computer is operating much more slowly than before. Spyware and viruses will seek to slow down your system as a means of getting you to download their rogue software. Once you download the software they will get your personal information (if they haven't gotten it already) and infect your system further.
